Secret Sphere

Sweet Blood Theory

I really don't get power & melodic metal bands sometimes. Why not break from the same formula that every single other band in the genre uses? Why sound like identical copies of a thousand other bands when you can be like Helloween, Gamma Ray or Dragonforce and actually sound like yourself? The reason why Dragonforce in particular is so popular is because their music is interesting throughout, not just on a few moments here and there, which is the case on Secret Sphere's new album "Sweet Blood Theory".

Take "Bring On", for example. The song bores the hell out of me, except during the few bits where the guitars take a turn towards the death metallish squeaks, or during the chorus where the band kind of sounds like Helloween. The only exception to the boringness trend on this album is "From A Dream To A Nightmare", an all symphonic onslaught of majestic proportions. Had all the songs been full of fast strings, pummeling drums, rhythm changes and so on, this could've been something really good.

However, as it stands right now, Secret Sphere sound just about the same as a band like Rhapsody: majestic power metal arrangements with progressive elements scattered everywhere, but no real appeal to anyone except the hardcore progressive/power metal fans (read: Germany as a whole). Check this release out on iTunes and just get the two songs recommended here, don't spend all your money on this.
