My Favorite Highway

How To Call A Bluff

I'll be honest with you from the beginning: If you're not one for soft rock, don't hesitate, just get the fuck out of here, because tonights band in question, My Favorite Highway, are as pop as anything rock comes.. And now that everyone with a penis has left, let's talk about the band's most recent album "How To Call A Bluff".

The album actually opens up pretty good, with "Simple Life" bouncing joyously to begin with, followed by "Getaway Car" that ups the ante with a great chorus, while your memories venture to the best of the moments you've had with The All-American Rejects and The Rocket Summer. It gets your hopes up alright, but already at track 3, "Bigger Than Love" the corny-o-metre overheats and blows wide open, as frontman Dave Cook's delivery of the song's chorus is simply too gospel to be taken seriously, and unfortunately the album never really recovers. Grounding is restored on "What Are You Waiting For", I know, but "Say So" goes right back to the cheesefest, and as the album progresses, it becomes more and more clear that this is music made to get girls out of their clothes faster than normal. Being a dude and listening to this is like staring at that hippie who's playing "Wonderwall" at the campfire, stealing the girl you've been trying to get with all summer - downright annoying.

Technically, I can't righteously slander My Favorite Highway, because they play their songs with skill, charm and energy, and their production is easily as good as what you'd expect from a major label band too. I suppose that if you have a soft spot for soft rock, this is slightly above The Jonas Brothers in terms of credibility, but then, it's only slightly, and while you probably could enjoy it, I'd recommend going for The Rocket Summer, or even some good old Goo Goo Dolls instead.
