Bayonets

Wishes & Wishes

Last month I came across an article somewhere, advertising the British band Bayonets, and their debut LP "Wishes & Wishes", which could be downloaded entirely for free (see download section below). Always one to admire bands who give their music away for free, I was intrigued enough to get the record and make a mental note to review it, and et voila, here we are.

Basically, Bayonets sound like We Were Promised Jetpacks except they mostly keep things at a slower pace. Otherwise it's raw stuff with a British accent that balances on the border between indie rock and post-punk, which, similarly to WWPJ, tends to start out tenderly with restrained repetitive riffs and an introverted tone of voice, only to explode into climatic noise and passionate, layered yells further in. That's the recipe Bayonets follow, and they follow it well, also spicing things up with an odd sample here or there. The first two tracks, "We Wish These Snakes Were Your Arms" and "The Battle Of Head An Heart" showcase this perfectly, while other numbers like "Trample city, Jhead + Snow Days" and "Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down", albeit still similar, also bring early material to mind from bands such as Brigade and Biffy Clyro.

This review is going to end shortly, because there isn't that much more to Bayonets' magic than a wall of distorted guitars and cried out, repeated refrains (think Nirvana's "You Know You're Right" for instance), and there doesn't need to be, because while consistency and variety are still themes the band can work on in the future, there is a considerable amount of moments here, which simply begs to have you rocking out and shouting along, and in the end, that's all that matters - Just check out the closer "My Stupid Mirror" and tell me you don't feel like yelling along stupidly to the refrain "I'm not saying it's over! But it's over! It's over!". The songs might not leave distinct individual memories, but as a record, and a free one at that, this is God damn enjoyable, and you'd be dumb to not get it.
