Slowmotion Apocalypse

My Own Private Armageddon

To those of you who don’t know yet, "Slowmotion Apocalypse" is the name of a group of 5 Italian metallers, that have just put out their debut album "My Private Armageddon". Having big metal-names for both inspiration, production, and having toured with bands like Converge and Every Time I Die, this band would immediately strike you as the kind you wanted to keep an eye on.

When you put on the record for the first time, and just listen to it in order to get a hang of what it sounds like, you’re going to think something along the lines of “wow.. this sounds quite alright”. The riffs and screams will instantly make you think of the first metalcore band on your mind, and thus my first thought was, that this was just like Trivium, only a lot heavier and without the clean singing. After some listens, I have to admit that the sound is even heavier than I first thought, and has a clearer resemblance to the European melodic death metal style we know from bands like At The Gates.

By now I should be going on about what makes this band stand out from the increasingly oversaturated metalcore ‘scene’. To be honest, the answer is nothing. We have the usual semi-quiet keyboard-backed opener. We have the badass riffing. We have the soar screamed out vocals and well, we have everything we expect from a metalcore outfit and frankly, nothing more. Despite giving you a solid first impression, "My Own Private Armageddon" won’t catch your attention at any point, unless you’re the most fanatic of metalcore lovers. This is actually a shame, since the bands' performance is beyond solid. There's nothing wrong with songs like "Psychic War 2.0" and "My Future's Burning" but there isn't really anything great about them either.

Slowmotion Apocalypse are without a doubt mighty fine musicians, but in the genre they have chosen to position themselves, more than a little creativity is needed, to make a band stand out among the countless others. If you’ve heard everything metalcore has to offer, and are still dying for more: Get this album. If not: Save your money for something with an identity of its own.
