The Tired & True

Scenarios

The summer months usually give birth to at least three or four New Found Glory themed pop punk records, and last year was no exception. One of those was a record called "Scenarios" by a Connecticut, US-based The Tired & True, which I figured I'd share with you guys after I stumbled on it by accident and was impressed over it being basically a treasure chest of joyous, summery pop punk songs - despite sporting a tough guy hardcore artwork for some strange reason.

I'll start with the bad news first. There isn't an ounce of originality to the band, as they sound more or less identical to early New Found Glory records with a modern twist in the vein of Fireworks. They're fronted with a nasally singing vocalist and base their entire sound on riff- and hook-driven, raw pop punk that made New Found Glory so loved and Fireworks so hyped two years ago. The sound is incredibly bright and happy all along, so if you happen to mind NFG this isn't going to be a band for you.

The good news, however, is that none of this matters, because New Found Glory are such an awesome band to start out with, any band that clones their sound successfully while managing to keep things honest and down-to-earth is likely to be in my good books. In case you didn't figure it out already, The Tired & True are that sort of band. Their songs are convincing and believable, but most importantly, they are insanely catchy.

The album opens with a technical riff and an explosive vocal shout "BEAUTIFUL GIRL!!" on "Art Fuck City" before continuing to a mad catchy sing along chorus. Later, "Excuse Me For Being A Businessman" reminds you why "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and "New Found Glory" are such great albums, before "Got My Pitch Back" offers yet more proof on why bands like them and Fireworks need to exist to brighten up our summer days (or winter, for that matter). The guitars and production follows a similarly raw, vibrant sound as the early NFG recordings, but I suspect the band were going for a cleaner and poppier sound.

For their next record, they only need to fix the echoing drums and they'll have a pop punk masterpiece in hand. The bright melody-driven songwriting is already there, considering how many pop punk 'hits' "Scenarios" contains. Why they are still so unknown, I have no idea, but here's a start.
