Cash No!

Something For Now

One intriguing aspect about globalisation and the internet is its effect on the music scenes. What previously seemed implausible or even impossible is now the norm, with bands influencing each other criss-cross around the planet, disregarding physical barriers and vast oceans in pursuit of a common goal, to write great music rooted in passion rather than the desire to be rock stars. One good example is Cash No! all the way from Melbourne, Australia (where the undersigned spent a semester on exchange as an uninteresting side note), whose sound combines influences from at least three different continents.

The genre is high-octane melodic skate punk, not as bright as early Millencolin (though on a couple of tracks "Pennybridge Pioneers" comes to mind) but pertaining to the sound of many other classic Swedish bands from the mid to late 90s when the genre was thriving. The guitars are quite heavy in places, carrying that same dense and aggressive tone derived from a similar metallic base like So-Cal's Strung Out, even displaying technical wizardry when it's needed. At the same time, the band sounds like they've been listening to the excellent Wiseheimer from their nation's largest city Sydney, though mostly my thoughts are driven towards NUFAN's bright, breakneck speed, but extremely melodic brand of skate punk.

There's no shame in sounding like any of these bands, or owning a sound that resembles the European scene from a decade ago or so, but despite a few extremely catchy songs, more is needed for Cash No! to become regulars on my punk-obsessed playlist. While "Track One" and "Ketchup Is For Weiners" certainly compete on even footing with the heavyweights, it still feels like "Something For Now" is missing that one secret ingredient that'd make it spill over instead of just being "pretty good". This is a good start, though, and if you like skate punk, spare a few dollars and go buy their record.
