A band called 'Graveyard'? Death metal you think? Far from it, for here we have a Swedish psychedelic/70's retro band very much in the vein of their fellow countrymen Witchcraft (with whom they share previous band connections) and in "Hisingen Blues" an album holding great beauty and understanding of what rock music was like in the pre-Pro Tools age when bands had to actually be able to play their instruments with heart and soul. Across the 9 songs and 40 minutes which fly past with a nay of moment of faux 70's posturing Graveyard tackle a combination of Witchcraft mixed with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin on vocals, all replete with the natural drum sound and audible bass which has made their style such a timeless sound.

"Ain't Fit To Live Here", "Buying Truth (Tack & Förlåt)" and especially "RSS" possess a great blues swagger which to my ears recalls the feel of pioneers in their field like Cream, which were it not the fact I know this to be a brand new release I could easily have been fooled in thinking this had come straight from the 1970's themselves. Showing adeptness at crafting varying moods to their songs "The Siren", "Longing" and "Uncomfortably Numb" show the band comfortably at home with the use of some moog synth and the airing of love-lost lyrics, if I'm not mistaken.

As if proving my point from previous discussions on the matter, bands with interesting covers tend to make the more interesting music. I'm not sure "Hisingen Blues" tops Witchcraft's self-titled debut LP for pure 70's retro magic, but then "Witchcraft" has had the best of 7 years to work it's magic and convince me natural organic productions are simply better than what most acts release today. Either way Graveyard's second album is a joy to listen to and with so few other bands playing this blues-tinged doomy rock music, "Hisingen Blues" is guaranteed to earn some future airings on this old hack's stereo.
