Great Exit Lines

After about 10 minutes of doing research for this review, it becomes painstakingly obvious, that the band in question, Brighton, UK –based District, is but one out of a quite substantial number of bands bearing that name or something of resemblance. After some closer examination I succeeded in finding a bandsite and a myspace profile, but I have to admit, that I was startled by how this band seemed to be drowning in the mass of "District Somethings" – and with good reason:

What can be said about the bands’ debut album "Great Exit Lines" can be summed up rather quickly. District plays straightforward alternative rock, with light dashes of emo added here and there for good measure. The falsetto vocals in the usual emo lead-/backup singer arrangement quickly gives you an idea of what is going on here, and the instrumentation might remind you of "BEDlight for blueEYES", though somewhat more calm, and by the utilization of the word "calm" I’ve uttered the downfall of the record.

Although the songs here are fine, and tracks like "Air" and "Kristen" will quickly find their way into your mind and have you humming along, there are absolutely no surprises hidden anywhere on this CD. There's really no noteworthy passion or edge or attitude to anything on this album, and listening to it is about as safe as listening to a record from Goo Goo Dolls. Nothing on this CD grabs you and demands your attention. Everything just works and then vanishes. The compositions and tempos and riffs seem so weirdly default, making you feel like you’ve heard all this before, only better.

To be fair, that is however all that is wrong with "Great Exit Lines", and just as well as there is nothing that will strike you as being just damn good, there isn’t anything that’s going to bother you either. It’s just so damn average and, well, boring. Sorry.
