Kicking Spit

Psychrockbullshit EP

Despite a questionable band name, Kicking Spit is a band worthy of your attention, especially if you found the raw emotion and blurry distortion in the latest Crime In Stereo record "I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone" brilliant. Although considerable differences exist between the two bands, this New Brunswick band falls roughly in the same musical landscape given their fuzzy and noisy interpretation of garage rock / garage punk on their new six-track EP "Psychrockbullshit".

But where Crime In Stereo draw their influence from gravelly punk rock, Kicking Spit lean towards early 90s lo-fi alternative/indie rock bands like Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr, and of course the legendary Hüsker Dü. Their emotional outbursts are delivered at a much faster pace and in a far more direct manner, though still preserving the inviting unpolished and grating guitar sound that makes all the bands mentioned in this review so great. Songs like "Way Out", "Skulls" and "Truth Or Consequences" all maintain a strong sense of subtle and hidden melody, but do so in a way that makes each song catch onto the listener after just one listen. Part of this effect can be attributed to their excellent vocalist who embeds raw, unadulterated emotion and intensity into each line he delivers, even though he is often pushed to the background of the soundscape due to the focus being on the screeching guitars and the frantic pace. But to me, that underlines how good of a vocalist he really is.

What's really impressive about "Psychrockbullshit" EP, however, is how uniform and cohesive it sounds all the way through. It has the sound of a band that has figured out early on their precise musical identity and how to execute it flawlessly. That's why it's difficult to put down the record after just one spin, because the flurry melodies and screeching vocals don't just disappear after a quick listen. They make a lasting impression instead, something which can't be said about the majority of young bands just starting out.
