Tornado

Amsterdamn, Hellsinki

I didn't want to get into yet another discussion on the ridiculous over-saturation of heavy metal in Europe where every band sounds identical to one another, but it's a hard one to avoid considering the generic band name of Tornado, let alone their stupid album title "Amsterdamn, Hellsinki" (the band is half-Dutch, half-Finnish. It's difficult to imagine them thinking that a title like that would be either a) funny or b) clever, because it's in the same rank of bad jokes as those I'm able to fire away on any given booze-fuelled Friday night. So keeping the overflowing unoriginality that stems from both the band name and the album title in mind, can you expect Tornado's stance on heavy metal to be anything else than generic?

Nope, not really. They position themselves somewhere in between typical examples from heavy metal and thrash metal, utilizing the majestic and epic sounding production, and size of the soundscape from the former, and the throbbing dual-guitar onslaught of the latter to come up with a decent cocktail of the two genres, but nothing you wouldn't have heard a billion times before in the past. Fortunately, Tornado show glimpses of promise on a few catchy tracks like "Hate Worldwide", where the riffs are aggressively played and the screeching solos sound good, albeit still not very original, which saves them from my metaphorical ax that I've been exercising with heavy hand recently on nondescript identikit heavy metal bands that show no desire to progress beyond their Judas Priest worship of the 80s. But as a whole, I just don't see enough reason to recommend "Amsterdamn, Hellsinki", when your record collection is likely to already contain at least a hundred records just like it.
