Harm

Demonic Alliance

When it comes to metal of any form, the bass guitar is so often treated like a slave instrument whose only purpose is to make the overall sound heavier by strictly following in line with the guitars. It's a shame, because when done right, it can breathe new life into a conventional metal expression. That is the case with Norway's Harm, whose sophomore album "Demonic Alliance" displays the instrument right at the forefront of the mix, with a ringing, strong presence that elevates Harm's otherwise textbook thrash metal onslaught to a higher level than it otherwise would be at.

It is this clear separation of roles that allows Harm's approach on thrash metal to take on such a vicious and grating sound. They bring a lightning speed assault on the table and supplement it with plenty of technical wizardry, tapped leads and quality riffing throughout, all delivered with the kind of urgency and tight conviction that would leave Exodus proud to proclaim Harm as their disciplines. Throw in a few chainsaw samples and horrific screaming by women and (presumably) children; the horror thrash affair with the devil as the lover has been set.

For 35 minutes Harm thrash through blinding riffs, thick and blooming bass lines, and an inescapably harsh soundscape that should leave no fan of the genre cold. Although it isn't necessarily original aside from the focus on the bass throughout, it's a quality piece of thrash metal that stands strong against a saturated field of competitors.
