Devil

Time To Repent

Now here's a band that should have our dear scribe EW drooling all over the place. Devil, from Norway, play a style of music so similar to his idols in Black Sabbath that one wouldn't be faulted for calling it blatant worship. Their retrospective riffs have just the right mix of rock'n'roll, doom, and stoner rock to recall the mighty original metal riffs of Sabbath, but with a teensy weensy bit of their own flavor in the mix to make their debut album "Time To Repent" an enjoyable experience overall.

Another band on the receiving end of a tribute here is Pentagram. In fact, combine the two and add a little bit of rock'n'roll and borderline satanic lyricism, and essentially, you have Devil. A 70s rock geared, groovy outfit that drowns their riffs in stoner vibes and a bleak, doom-laden soundscape overall. While many have attempted to clone Sabbath, few do it with songs as catchy as Devil on "Time To Repent". The title track, in particular, is one of the finest Sabbath homages I've heard in as long as I can remember, and "Break The Curse" doesn't come short either. And albeit it all sounds very Heavy Metal (tm), like dozens or even hundreds of bands you've heard in the past, somehow Devil manage to convey a timeless vibe with their riffs, where their peers often sound dated and irrelevant. This should be a huge hit at festivals like Wacken and Hellfest.
