Dethrone EP

Dethrone is a Swedish death/thrash metal band founded last summer in Värnamo, southern Sweden, who are due to play the prestigious Metal Town festival in Gothenburg in June. After hearing their debut EP, the simply titled five track onslaught "Dethrone EP", it's no wonder they're already now being considered to play amongst the elite international metal bands on Sweden's answer to Copenhell. It's a record that doesn't necessarily break any boundaries and stays rather strictly confined within the limits of the thrash/death genres, but it works because of its uncompromisingly raw and deliberate sound that leaves most demos far behind.

Basically, their approach to modern thrash metal is much alike that of our very own Essence. They take a formula that's been proven to work in the past, and execute it very, very well. The record sounds absolutely grating and unforgiving at times, as if a cheese grater is being applied to your brain in rapid succession to use a cliché expression, and they complement their furious shredding with killer leads that essentially shout "WE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE DOING" to the listener straight from the get go.

Though the tracks race by the listener in quick succession and the whole ordeal is done in just under twenty minutes, the listener is left with a good impression over the potential of this relatively inexperienced bunch. Especially the added melody line in "When I Decide" suggests that Dethrone are able to write a solid thrash/death metal record with enough melody to lure in unsuspecting listeners too, though without ever venturing into melodeath territory. Keep an eye on these guys in the future.
