Nation Despair

Exitium Mundi EP

Nation Despair are a Finnish melodic death metal outfit who've been reviewed a couple of times on this site before, and hence it warms my heart to see the significant progress that has been made on their third EP "Exitium Mundi" EP. Pretty much all of my concerns (other than sub par production) have been fixed, and the band have slowly perfected their Sentenced-inspired, low tempo melodic death metal into a version that's now fully compatible with the genre standards and should be enough to land the band a record deal in due time.

Already from the opening moments of "Exitium Mundi", the elegance of the melancholic guitar melody makes it clear that these are the best songs Nation Despair have written throughout their short career. They are more progressive and definitely more melodic in their nature; it is good to see that they are playing to their strengths and integrating more and more of the melancholic melody so extensively used by Finnish bands into their Dark Tranquillity interpretation. It is not until the brilliant "Purified", however, that Nation Despair properly start to show form. The underlying riffing is solid for any metal release, and although the growling could still use some work (a production issue), the song's Amon Amarth-esque chorus is great and the lead melody is superb. If they can continue writing songs like this one, they'll soon start turning heads in the melodeath crowd. Keep up the good work!
