Death By Snoo Snoo

Tästä Saat

I handpicked the latest release by Oulu, Finland's Death By Snoo Snoo solely because of their weird name, fully expecting to hear something different and unique. That's precisely what "Tästä Saat" is all about, and the best way I can come up with to describe it is to take the pop punk with female/male dynamic of bands like Mixtapes and Lemuria, and imagine them collaborating on a hardcore release with silly, totally unserious lyrics about reptile people and robot moms.

Yeah - it's exactly as weird as it sounds.

They're fronted by a female rebellious spirit called Hanne, whose high pitch shouts and yells are surely among the least restrained and most riot grrrl inspired you'll come to hear in 2012. She's contrasted by the harsher yells of backing vocalist Lauri, mostly in the form of alternating vocal lines that create an interesting contrast between one another. But Hanne's mostly in control, and she sounds pissed off. All the lyrics are in Finnish, so non-natives won't understand a thing, but unless you're into freaking weird stuff you're definitely not missing out. The songs mostly consist of vivid, rumbling bass lines, ravaging high tempo guitars, and the accompanying d-beat drums for speed and added reckless vibe, but are nothing out of the ordinary if it wasn't for their comedic value.

The band used to be called Moominvalley Hardcore Crew, which specialized in old school hardcore punk songs (mostly Beastie Boys covers from their 80s era), and as such it's not surprising to find Death By Snoo Snoo also sourcing most of their sound from that era of punk/hardcore. That said, they have a few oddities on the record such as "Paperi Vaivaa", which sounds suspiciously identical to The Cranberries classic song "Zombie" in its melody line. Hmm.

In the end, though, "Tästä Saat" isn't that special. It's a funny record you'll spin for a couple of times with a few decent melodies, but at 18 songs, they definitely need to pick their songs more deliberately to get rid of the nondescript songs that poke the listener every other track or so, despite the track length averaging around the 90 second mark.
