Wicked Wisdom

Lets see how many of you will believe that the actress wife of rapper/actor Will Smith, Jada Pinket Smith, is metal. I know that sounds like one of the first jokes of the year but it's not. She started her music journey with Wicked Wisdom more than two years ago, performed some shows at Ozzfest 2005 and on September 2006 released their self titled debut album.

I'm not sure what kind of thoughts this information has triggered in you regarding the quality of the band's music and I was certainly hopeless at first.. till I heard the first minutes of the album. The album starts with "Yesterday Don't Mean", featuring a raw guitar riff and then Jada's voice barking the lyrics. It's more than a promising start, and the song is good enough to boil your blood. The second track, "Something Inside Me", continues the promise of the first track: She's still singing in a monotoneus pattern next to a heavy riff. The follow up, "One", has the same formula and it too fulfils the expectations the listener is starting to have at this point. The fourth song, however, takes the album into a new direction: Jada's voice sores higher and the guitars and the drums open up a slightly more.

It's obvious that Jada doesn't possess the best vocal abilities but at least she knows the limit of her voice and is using it well. It helps of course that she is also surrounded by a talented group of musicians. Rhythm Guitarist and the keyboard player Korel holds the main role of maintaining the band's own sound and also accompanies lead guitarist Pocket's wild guitar style.

All in all, my prejudices were a terrible mistake and originally had me thinking that Wicked Wisdom's debut album wouldn't be worth a listen. It's not a must have or anything phenomenally good but I admire her courage for trying to become a part of the metal scene which is traditionally difficult to break into.
