Broken Heroes

This Is Oi!

The Oi! punkers all seem to believe they're still living in 70s Britain where the punk movement and its associated rebellion against authority originated from. And so authentic is the sound of Broken Heroes to that imagery (complete with the skinhead look and all) that I was initially 100% convinced they must be English as well. It turns out they're from New Jersey, which hasn't prohibited them from writing "This Is Oi!", though. It's a record that follows the Oi! punk rulebook in every imaginable way.

"This Is Oi!" features raw, gargled yells (that remind me of Good Clean Fun), and simple chord based punk rock that has some reminiscence to the street punk scene, but is distinctly different in its usage of British style gang vocals, and old school punk melody in its sound. It's basically sourcing its inspiration from the likes of Cock Sparrer and Cockney Rejects, so it doesn't sound that different to the genre mainstays, but that's sort of been the point with this record in the first place. They are attempting to re-create the original Oi! punk atmosphere and they're doing so reasonably well throughout the record, albeit without being flashy at any point. It's only their second full-length since forming in 1991, but that's because Oi! died out rather fast during the 90s and is only recently experiencing a resurgence with a number of old bands reuniting for old time's sake.

The vocals will put most people off immediately, but if you're able to get past them, there are a few chant-alongs and catchy melodies to be found here. It's decent Oi!, which comes with a 'this sounds dated' stamp immediately, but hey, if you're into the genre, why not check this one out as well.
