Dark Stares

Tell Your Friends EP

In a time and era where there's a real shortage of rock bands in the traditional interpretation of the genre, a band like Dark Stares is a timely entrant to the scene with their debut EP "Tell Your Friends". It's a no-bullshit type of release that toys with a few influences from subgenres ranging from grunge to stoner to southern rock, but never enough to justify pigeonholing the group as anything else than a rock band. Think Foo Fighters, QOTSA, The White Stripes, without necessarily sounding like any of them in particular.

And that's one of Dark Stares' absolute strengths: this is only their debut EP, yet they launch with an immediately convincing and grabbing sound from the get go. There's a nice amount of clean distortion in the sound to give it that rock'n'roll vibe, while the clean vocals (that are occasionally applied through a southern filter) source from mainstream Brit rock to ensure hook-laden choruses are what this EP is all about. There are only four songs on offer here, but each is a catchy, solid rock piece that reminds us what this genre was once all about: big guitars and bullshit-free celebration of good songs delivered through good riffs and memorable vocals. I'll grade them on the hesitant side, though, as we need to hear more before we'll pass proper judgement.
