13.0.0.0.0

On the eve of their album release, This Town Needs Guns felt the need to change their name just to TTNG in response to the gun controversies going on across the pond, where they've been touring a lot lately. TTNG is a pointless choice, though, because everyone's going to be asking each other 'so what does TTNG stand for'? Do the math. And speaking of math, we're deep in the realms of light math rock, with intricate guitar lines intertwining across a perplexed soundscape, where their new vocalist Henry Tremain is in spotlight with his smooth voice.

During "13.0.0.0.0", TTNG draw considerable similarities to seminal math rockers Minus The Bear, except they offer a more technical version than the latter band does nowadays. The soundscape is jammed with advanced guitars featuring stop-start signatures and unpredictable tempo-switches, which is usually associated with much heavier music, but TTNG make a point here in sounding as light and fluffy as possible. It ensures that Tremain's higher pitch vocals sound sexy above the mix, and gives their sound a sense of smoothness and chillaxed vibe overall. And because the two are such a great fit together, there's a distinct feeling of uniformity throughout the album. Each song sounds subtly different and is memorable in its own way, but yet they feel like an album together more than just a collection of individual songs.

Alongside the crazed guitar work that is the strongest aspect of "13.0.0.0.0" overall. Its light mood and focus on intricacy without abandoning catchy songwriting is another reason to check this album out. Many math rock bands tend to just go for over-complexity, and while the guitars here certainly can be argued to be extraordinarily complex, the pop vocals and their relative simplicity is an important contrast that makes the album feel quite accessible. In summary, "13.0.0.0.0" is yet another example of TTNG proving they are one of the most unique math rock bands around.
