Momentum

A World In Ruins EP

Momentum are a brand new heavy metal band from Århus, Denmark, but unlike most outfits in the over saturated genre, their expression feels like a breath of fresh air on debut EP "A World In Ruins". One reason is the superb production by Jacob Bredahl, which leaves their riffs clean and crisp in the mix, and ensures their vocalist's best Maiden/Accept impression sounds good all around. But far more importantly, Momentum have nailed down their songwriting for their first EP and come across as a band with conviction and talent far above the average heavy metal outfit from the Germany/Austria/Switzerland region.

Many heavy metal bands make the fatal mistake of concentrating on sounding as epic and majestic as possible at the cost of the songwriting, which means you're unable to distinguish them from the thousands of bands doing the same thing across the continent. Not Momentum, who instead focus on writing solid metal riffs in the vein of the old school legends. The rollicking riffs on album highlight "Soldier" should remind you of Maiden's greats, but why not also other mainstay names from the classic 80s heavy metal style before the genre drowned in copycat bands during the 90s and the 2000s.

But although their influences are clear, Momentum still add enough of their own touch to sound convincing and natural instead of just another clone band. Though the riffage mostly follows the Maiden thread throughout, they are original, quality riffs, which is a large reason why Momentum sound so good. That their vocalist's sharp style is charismatic and memorable in its own right only adds to that impression, and after the five tracks are done, I can't help but think that this might be the most promising Danish metal band since Essence.
