Gatherer

Postcards EP

"It's five A.M wake up and smell the disappointments. It's clear to me you've made your choice, again" screams vocalist Christian Berrigan on "Wedding Bells", the opening track on New Jersey-based Gatherer's impressive four-track debut EP "Postcards". Both the introspective style of the lyricism as well as the emotionally torn, heartfelt delivery immediately suggest that Gatherer take their inspiration directly from Touché Amoré and La Dispute style emotional hardcore; the rest of the EP follows suit by essentially cloning former band's sound if not outright note-by-note, then at least in an impeccably similar manner.

But you know what? In this case it doesn't matter. The expression resonates pure honesty and passion, evident in the desperation-driven howls and in the short, under two-minute bursts of emotional discharge falling within the post-hardcore / screamo category. They simply don't need to be original when their soundscape is this packed with urgency and immediacy. It's a convincing sound either way, thanks to the excellent vocal performance and the electric dynamic between the instrumentals in the mix, which is best described as setting a nostalgic, almost longing mood to the album. All that explodes into shreds under the treatment of their vocalist's fantastic screams - just the way this style was always meant to be played.

The seven minutes that the EP lasts are an intense; Gatherer grab you from the beginning without letting go. It's a record that's best experienced in intimate surroundings, at basement style shows with intense mosh pits and people hanging from the rafters while screaming back every lyric at the band. It's a record drenched in emotion and in heartfelt passion, in subdued aggression, and surprisingly catchy, subtle melodies. "Postcards" might be one of the most impressive EPs I've heard in 2012 - watch out for this band in 2013.
