What Worms Inherit

Fragment EP

So here we are again, with "Fragment", the next EP from the Copenhagen based progressive alternative/trash metal unit What Worms Inherit. Their debut was plagued with inconsistent songwriting that was at best characterized as bland and uninspired, with hints of influence from much bigger bands but without proper capacity to execute that influence in a noteworthy manner. On "Fragment", their problems continue along the same lines, but the songwriting has improved to an extent where the songs now follow an actual red thread throughout instead of just being lengthy for being lengthy's sake.

We're still dealing with song lengths between 5 and 7½ minutes, which is too much, considering there's way too much anonymous riffing and sections that could've easily been left out in between the interesting passages. On occasion, they muster cool riffs and hints of evil melody that lift an eyebrow or two, especially towards the last couple of minutes of "Along Came The Foul", so it's not that the guys can't write solid material. It's that they need to find a way to drop their forcibly progressive stance and condense their songs so that all the unnecessary parts are left out. That would still leave the vocals, however, which alongside the demo-like production are still huge issues for the band. Neither the growls or the Hetfield style yells are on par with what you'd expect to hear on a quality release, not because they are technically incompetent but because they lack the sort of charisma that'd stop the 'in one ear, out the other one' tendency that unfortunately carries through the entire EP.

In my ears, What Worms Inherit suffer from the classic Danish metal band syndrome where the desire and motivation is there, but ability to write anything but generic metal doesn't exist in any meaningful quantity. So while it's difficult to pick apart "Fragment" more than I already have, it's still not a terrible release, it's just forgettable and, well, average for all purposes.
