T Minus 3 EP

3PM, who are not to be confused with 3AM whose record we reviewed recently, are a fresh pop punk band out of Baltimore, whose high-spirited and infectiously catchy take on the genre is an instant winner on their six-track debut EP "T Minus 3". The band references classics by New Found Glory and Blink 182 in a fun expression that also draws from more modern soundalikes such as Fireworks, but it does so in a super enthusiastic manner that's almost certainly thanks to the band's young age. They're all between 15 and 21 years old, which makes this record all the more impressive, because it's right up there with the debut EPs of much, much bigger bands in terms of how catchy their overall sound is.

Really, all you need to know about 3Pm is packed into a nutshell in the opening lyrics to "Won't Go Home": "Me and all my friends, hanging out at the Warped Tour...", a great, light-hearted way to open up a pop punk song that's essentially all about having fun. And here's the key difference between a bland pop punk band cloning the sounds of other bands and a great pop punk band drawing parallels to seminal bands in the genre: it really sounds like all members of 3PM are having boatloads of fun while playing these songs. And who can blame them? There's a plethora of bouncy and crunchy riffs in place to ensure that easycore vibe; enough bright and summery choruses to deal to have the whole scene singing along, plenty of "Let's go" shouts accompanied by high tempo, and basically all the ingredients of a band that's destined for big things if they keep things up. Sure, you can criticize the production for being a little rough, but here it adds character to 3PM's sound, although it doesn't really need any extra. Why, you ask? Well, it's simple, really. The band's light-hearted, bouncy expression has all the character it needs already, thanks to insanely catchy songs that defy the band's lack of experience. Keep it up boys, this has potential to light up the scene like With The Punches did a couple of years ago.
