The Memory

Eulogy For A Dead Ocean

The Memory are a melodic hardcore group originating from near Bari, Italy, whose debut album "Eulogy For A Dead Ocean" was sent to us for review purposes as a part of a bigger package by Indelirium Records. Turns out this small label houses a number of very decent melodic hardcore bands, as evident by the recent review of label colleagues Step On memories.

Much like them, The Memory trust in the energy and the treble-charged melodic guitar lines of Comeback Kid as their primary influence. The vocalist's coarse, but decipherable yell is also very obviously inspired by Andrew Neufeld of said band. However, where they differentiate themselves is in the overload of melody most songs are embedded with. Songs like "Butterfly Effect" or "Alive" may be breakneck speed hardcore tracks with piercing yelled vocals, but they also shove Casey Jones / Evergreen Terrace style melodic leads in your face all the time, so there's no shortage of catchy riffs, and chant-along moments present here.

At the same time, "Eulogy For A Dead Ocean" has one major problem: it all sounds a bit samey. Sure, all songs have melodically resonating lead guitars, but their vocalist's lack of variation is a major problem. While his delivery is technically solid, varying his range would do many of the songs wonders. Right now, it sounds like we're listening to the same song ten times in a row with minor adjustments here and there. But that's only a minor criticism, because as a whole, "Eulogy For A Dead Ocean" is a fine melodic hardcore record, geared for the more punk-inspired crowds rather than the two-steppers out there.
