Light Years

I Won't Hold This Against You

If there's one thing to take from 2013 in terms of trends within the music scene, it is the impact of Title Fight's "Floral Green" in 2012 and to a certain extent "Shed" one year earlier. The dreamy style of post-hardcore that combines elements from punk, grunge, and post-hardcore into a single expression that's difficult to pigeonhole has truly triumphed in 2013, with new bands seemingly entering the scene every month with a new interpretation to the style. Daylight, Citizen, Turnover, Ivy League TX, Basement are just a few names from the top of my head that have pursued this style very successfully, and now we can add Light Years from Ohio to the mix with their debut album "I Won't Hold This Against You".

Following a series of EP releases since 2010, the quartet has been honing their sound, relying on a similarly dreamy post-hardcore sound with heavily tuned guitars as Daylight and Turnover. But where those bands display undertones of grunge underneath their sound, Light Years draw from fast paced pop punk instead, sounding remarkably similar to "The Last Thing You Forget"-era Title Fight with some modifications toward the slower, more dreamy style every once in a while. It means that songs like "Put Myself Together" are played at breakneck pace, while still using a crooned vocal style similar to that by Daylight and especially Citizen, while a song like "Throwing My Life Away" floats around softly with plenty of time spent in exploring progressive ideals and a soothing sound overall.

The vast majority of songs on the album are of the punk rock variety, though, even if strong parallels can be consistently drawn to the bands I've mentioned in this review already. In short, Light Years feel like a punkier version of those bands, but not enough to justify labeling them a punk rock band in my opinion. This is good, because the attention to detail adds so much more depth to their sound than is possible in a purely punk rock expression, hence Light Years feels like another one of those grower albums that might surprise you 10-15 listens in with great rewards.
