Safe Crusades / No Judgments / And Baby

The candidate for one of the most beautiful albums in 2014 sonically speaking goes to The Caution Children, a tiny original screamo band from Jacksonville, Florida, whose uplifting and lofty melodies are pierced by desperation-driven howls and screams like few other bands I know. Influenced by the likes of envy, Pianos Become The Teeth, and Suis La Lune, their expression is so fully of beauty and rich landscapes of detailed soundscapes it's impossible not to be drawn to it. How they've managed to stay hidden this long is insane, as "Safe Crusades / No Judgments / And Baby" is their third full-length based on the limited information I've been able to dig up from them on the internet, and yet it suggests the band has been writing music this awesome for a long while now. Expect to hear a lot more about these guys in the near future.

The album consists of ambitious soundscapes that combine the progressive vibes of envy-style post-metal together with post-rock ambiance and the chaotic nature of original screamo bands like Orchid, Saetia and many others. Of more modern bands Pianos Become The Teeth have lately been doing the same thing where tormented screams and cinematic sequences walk hand-in-hand in perfect understanding of each other's needs and qualities, and the result is nothing short of breathtaking. Lengthy instrumental, shoegaze oriented interludes like "Superb Lyrebird Recording" and "Over-Under" create breathing room and make the faintly screamed vocals sound that much more incredible on tracks like "Letter To My Child", which is one of those hair-raising tracks that should put chills on your back strictly based on its inner beauty alone. The amount of melody embedded within the post-rock/post-metal hybrid expression is perfect for matching the uplifting screams that follow a similarly progressive and atmosphere-building approach as the instrumentals, and the final result is... well, it's something else I tell you.

"Safe Crusades / No Judgments / And Baby" is slow when it needs to be (opener "The Same Thing In Three Parts", for example), faster and more abrasive elsewhere ("Psalms"), and utilizes the quiet/loud dynamic to frightening consistency. It's one of those albums where you listen to it and it just clicks immediately from the first listen as you are hypnotized by their all-encompassing melodies that rise and keep rising until they reach an explosion point of cacophonous melody that's simply amazing. The mixture of genres achieved here is near-perfect; everything blends together seamlessly and smoothly to create a contender for envy's throne for post-rock/metal influenced screamo.
