Beach Slang

Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken? EP

It's safe to say Beach Slang wear their influences proudly on their sleeve during their four-track debut EP "Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?". Echoes of everyone from Jawbreaker and Samiam to Superchunk and Hüsker Dü are strongly present in their soundscape, which means we're dealing with primarily 90s alternative rock with hints of punk rock embedded within. The guitars are reverb-laden with plenty of treble, leaving behind a classic 90s echo that we remember from so many of our favorite alternative rock albums from that era. It's not a far off parallel to draw if you were to compare them to classic Goo Goo Dolls, only played in a slightly faster tempo.

It's an expression that exhibits boatloads of honesty thanks to the smokey vocals that recall Leatherface's delivery on later material. The songwriting is great, with "Filthy Luck" and "Punk Or Lust" acting as the highlights on the short, barely 11 minute EP, showcasing a knack for writing catchy alternative rock tunes that feel like plenty of depth is found within the fuzzy soundscape. That Beach Slang play everything with a fast-paced, uptempo pace, here bringing in their punk rock influence means the songs also have a sense of driving energy attached to them. Still, it's difficult to avoid praising the golden throat of James Snyder (Weston), whose scratchy, smoke-flavored croons are the perfect match to the melodically ringing guitars. They contain a strong sense of nostalgia and longing, which works well together with the overall 90s feeling of the record.

After just four songs I'm rather convinced that this band's the real deal. "Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?" is simply flawless, earnest alternative rock delivered precisely in the manner the genre was originally meant to be played. Expect big things from these guys in the future.
