Angel Du$t

A.D.

From Baltimore, Maryland we have an interesting band called Angel Du$t, whose debut album "A.D." successfully blends together influence from skate punk and old school hardcore to arrive at a sound that has distinct crossover vibes attached to it. Their high tempo onslaught races through 12 songs in just under 15 minutes, which doesn't leave much to play with in terms of song length, yet they manage just fine with a number of catchy offerings throughout the record.

Their songs range from typical skate punk songs like "Smash You Up" and "Big One" to heavier, almost metallic songs like "Pacify Me" where it's clear that the thrash metal scene has been an influence to the band at some point. Old school, 80s type hardcore undertones are constant in the crunchy, down-tuned guitars, even if most songs are sung cleanly with the odd shout here and there. Basically, they sound a great deal like Pennywise did in the mid to late 90s era, except with a heavier foundation behind the guitars. The record is tightly put together, meaning the guitars are the perfect soundtrack for your next skate session, whether in Tony Hawk or in real life.

"Big One" is the album highlight with its easygoing, light skate punk vibe and a catchy clean chorus driving the song home despite its miniscule 1 minute and 10 second length. Elsewhere, "Stepping Stone" provides another groovy tune that's easy to sing along to or circle pit to at a venue. "Smash You Up" is the most Pennywise sounding track on the record, so it's no surprise to find it as one of the best on the record as well. Still, when the songs range from great to average, consistency is dearly needed before Angel Du$t can compete with the big boys.
