Evile

Enter The Grave

And so the Bay Area thrash metal revival continues. Evile, consisting of four young lads from the UK, shred like motherfuckers on their debut album "Enter The Grave", drawing influence from "Kill 'Em All" era Metallica, Exodus and Slayer. Very original. In the past six months I've heard Fueled By Fire, SSS, Municipal Waste, HouseMaster, Dekapitator, Onslaught and countless others attempt to nostalgically revive the late 80s early 90s thrash scene back to its high class underground status, without much success. With "Enter The Grave", Evile joins the club of thrash / crossover bands hopelessly trying to reach the charm and originality of a scene dead long time ago, without noteworthy success.

Sure, a song or two on the record has amazing solos played at breakneck speeds, the guitarists can both shred like Kerry King when required, and the angry yells of vocalist Matt Drake sound like Araya/Hetfield put together. But that's not enough to convince me about this album. The songwriting is at time so predictable that even without hearing the songs ever before, I was humming along to the next riff or shred. Song after song the guitars shred in the Metallica style flawless production, with minimal tempo variation and structure versatility.

I guess the same thing applies to "Enter To Grave" as to so many other things. If something already exists and you attempt to plagiarize it, the most probable outcome is that you end up sounding either a) cliché, b) Much worse compared to the classics or c) both. While Evile might not sound cliché, option b certainly applies to them.
