Got It Made EP

The first of two Guttermouth EPs this year, “Got It Made”, as its title subtly suggests, is their first release in a long time. Ten years to be exact, which is when “Shave The Planet” completed a series of absurdity-driven, hilarious punk rock albums that dominated the scene awareness throughout the 90s and the first half of 2000s until a hiatus temporarily took them out of business. Since then, much has happened. Founder and singer Mark Adkins moved to Mexico and reformed the band in 2015 with all new members, remaining as the only member of the band having contributed on any of their past releases.

So what does that mean musically? Ten years has given the band a slightly more polished sound thanks to improved production, but otherwise, Adkins has miraculously managed to hold on to the band’s original sound, delivering six tracks of tight, playful punk rock that are characterized by outrageous lyrics and offensive content all around. “Old Man”, for instance, is about being married to an inbred, and “A Punk Rock Tale Of Woe” is a rather interesting critique on someone else’s life choices. Tackling topics with a sobering sense of offensive humour coupled with infectiously catchy songwriting has always been Adkins’ weapon of choice through Guttermouth’s long career, and that continues to hold through throughout this EP. Fans of Frenzal Rhomb, The Vandals, and The Dwarves should find themselves right at home.

Strictly stylistically speaking, “Got It Made” EP is punk rock with a capital P. NOFX-inspired tight riffs, an aggressive tempo, and a melodic approach that nonetheless steers clear of pop punk is what it’s all about. It’s a classic 90s formula that worked then and works today, leaving behind a memorable, if disappointingly short Guttermouth experience.
