Counterfeit

Together We Are Stronger

Counterfeit is an interesting outfit on paper, being marketed as one of the most innovative bands hardcore has seen lately with an altogether different take on the genre on their debut album "Together We Are Stronger". Lofty statements about the unit, and much of it marketing jargon that's exaggerating the reality somewhat. In fact, it's debatable whether Counterfeit can be classified as a hardcore band at all? All I'm hearing throughout the record is basically a carbon copy of Papa Roach circa 2004's "Getting Away With Murder" and the albums thereafter. In other words, modern mainstream rock with an attitude, or hard rock, if you will.

Now, that need not be a bad thing. In fact, Counterfeit have drenched their expression in so much cool attitude and smooth groove that you can basically imagine these guys rocking the stage, each wearing sunglasses indoors, with their guitarists sizzling their tongues like Gene Simmons while riffing away. Pure rock'n'roll guitars combine with a high-octane tempo to produce an expression that's essentially Papa Roach turbocharged on steroids most of the time. A similar comparison can be made to Lostprophets or even Hoobastank in places. A big production helps promote the sleazy atmosphere the band is aiming towards with some verses almost rapped for added impact. On the opposite side of the spectrum, they display emo/screamo stylistical references. "Lost Everything", for instance, is a dramatic, ambitious, and anthemic track that recalls The Used. It's packed with theatrical melodies that elevate it as the best track on the record ahead of the more aggressive, hardcore rooted pieces like "Addiction" and "For The Thrill Of It".

Throughout the record one trait, in particular, keeps reappearing song after song: the shamelessly pompous attitude. When merged with outrageously rock'n'roll-fueled riffs that go over the top at every opportune moment, you actually end up with an expression that works, precisely because it is so over-the-top. That's what makes Counterfeit such a fun listen, alongside their higher-than-average mainstream rock band level songwriting, of course.
