Get Wise

When a press release claims a record to be the pop punk album of the year, you peel your eyes and think: really?. Alas, that is not the case on Attic Salt's sophomore album "Get Wise" no matter how much praise their debut received from various reputable punk sources, yet it's still nonetheless an enjoyable entry in the world of FEST-related bands.

Hailing from Springfield, IL, Attic Salt plays the kind of laid-back form of pop punk with a male/female dynamic that immediately draws your thoughts towards bands like Candy Hearts, Lemuria, or Mixtapes. All playing a similar style, no-frills, easygoing style of pop punk with a hint of indie-flavor on the background. It's upbeat and unassuming, delivering song after song of subtly catchy cuts that feel as naive and innocent as they are catchy. And with songs like "Fool 4 U", we're in the quintessence of what Attic Salt's pop punk is all about: emotions and relationships. They are total feel-good stories that are relatable for most people, and when coupled with slick hooks like those on album highlight "MOD", the end result is a happy-go-lucky, enjoyable feeling when you're listening to the band.

The songs are simplistic enough for you to turn your brain off and just hum or sing along, yet still strong enough lyrically to not feel like throwaway material. Songs like "Last Song", "Mud" and "Washington Street" round together an overall solid record that might not be among the best this year, but would I go check out their set at the next FEST? Absolutely.
