Sweet Teeth

Acid Rain

Amidst rural Sweden, in Finspång you'll find a vibrant gem waiting to be discovered by anyone who's ever fallen in love with the treble-charged, joyous melodies of bands like Superchunk, Dinosaur Jr and Bob Mould (or his main band, Hüsker Dü). Sweet Teeth's debut album "Acid Rain" has in short order captivated yours truly through its distortion-laden buzz and noisy, but cheerful melodies that just feel so bloody engaging from first listen.

Led by the scratchy, gravelly singing style of Andreas Axelson, the quarter delivers exactly the kind of honest, sparking melodic wave that oozes pure rejoice from playing music. Every song features the kind of upbeat distortion and infectious melody lines that great records are made of: take a song like "Acid Rain" or "Her", the fuzzy guitar combined with the gravelly vocals (that are comparable to Off With Their Heads' Ryan Young) is as convincing as it is infectiously catchy. You'll be singing along the chorus lines of "My Heart Is Big And Broken" in no time, whilst the buzzing soundscape charms you away for its simplistic, no-bullshit stance. It's all about raw melody and pleasantly ringing distortion played in an upbeat fashion.

Indeed, Sweet Teeth aren't exactly innovative here, but nor do they need to be. "Acid Rain" is simply a textbook example of how to take a genre and play it exactly right, sourcing just enough from genre-nostalgia without sounding derivative or generic. One of the most vividly resonating records I've heard all year. Be sure to check this one out.
