Awaiting A Tide

Copenhagen, Denmark-based noise-rockers Writhe do a classic post-punk impression on their debut album "Awaiting A Tide". Through dark and noisy claustrophobia, the pompous vocals by Nick Magnusson take us on a journey through similarly unmelodious and purposefully off-tune soundscapes as you've heard on records by iceage, Idles, Metz, Savages, et al. You know, an expression that oozes pretentious hipsterism despite its clear punk undertones that are noticeable particularly by the fast tempo in songs like "Sleep In Fire" or the title track, "Awaiting A Tide".

Indeed, Writhe spend copious amounts of time paying tribute at the altar of Joy Division and The Smiths throughout the record. They're sourcing directly from the British rock scene circa the 1980s, translating its dark realms into a post-modern, lo-fi take on the original sound. A song like "Beacon" is exemplary in delivering its vocals lazily, as if to make a point that they couldn't care less, which has always been the draw in this style for some listeners. Why some are so keen on music that effectively sounds like it doesn't want you anywhere near it is a mystery to me.

Fortunately, Writhe is also able to encompass that atmosphere into solid songwriting. "Molding Spines", for instance, features catchy guitar shredding that makes the song so intriguing, while the punk ambiance of "Sleep In Fire" makes it another catchy track to take note of. And when all of it is shrouded in cacophonic melancholy at the same time, there's some reason to give Writhe a proper chance. That is if you're able to get over the eerie hipsterism and other classic aspects of post-punk in the first place.
