Beachheads II

While listening to The Lemonheads-esque stylistical vibes on Beachheads' sophomore album "Beachheads II", Kvelertak probably isn't a band that pops to mind. But if you inspect their lineup, you'll find Vidar and Marvin on guitars and bass, respectively. They've teamed up with former synthpop singer Børild Haughom and drummer Espen Kvaløy to create an intriguing side project that sounds nothing like their main band.

Instead, Beachheads specialize in fuzzy, catchy alternative rock that carries itself with a buzzing spirit. The result is a cheerful atmosphere that's drenched in nostalgia and upbeat melodies that range from Superchunk-esque odes to the joy of playing music, down to Cloud Nothings style punk-fueled post-punk on "Nothing", for example. Nods to Hüsker Dü and The Replacements appear frequently, too.

Compared to their debut album, "Beachheads II" better captures the inherent catchiness on treble-charged, upbeat fuzz rock on songs like "Death Of A Nation". The rapid tempo and the light vocals are a perfect match for a memorable expression, where 60s style pop-rock blends with indie, alternative, and elements of early 90s punk rock in the process.

Børild's casual hums only add character to the soothing soundscape, but at the same time the band's metal'n'roll origins ensure that the songs don't become boring pop rock pieces, thanks to some infectiously catchy riffs on e.g. "Change" and "10000 Hurts", to name but a few.

Overall, "Beachheads II" is a refreshing, nostalgia-laden album that'll remind you of summery days and good times had. It's a retrospective record stylistically, meaning there's nothing particularly innovative or new to be discovered here, but the execution is nonetheless spot on.
