Seventh Wave

Swedish skate punk masters No Fun At All have been virtually everywhere in the last few years. It's no longer a question of which festival or town they played, but rather a question of which one they didn't play. Alongside releasing "Grit" four years ago, they've been celebrating their seminal album "Out Of Bounds" for a good couple of years, playing the album live front to back pretty much everywhere. I guess they are making up for time lost between 2008 and 2018, but either way, we've seen and heard a LOT to NFAA over the last few years. And here they are again with their seventh studio album, "Seventh Wave".

Its title is rather suggestive of its contents as well. It's the seventh time for the same classic melodicore sound, tight skate punk delivered in textbook fashion with wide-open vocals and catchy, sing-along choruses. It's literally the same album they've been writing over the years, following the tried-and-tested Bad Religion formula of keeping their fanbase happy. And why not continue like this?

"See The Splendor", "Every Single Screen" and "Smart You Out" are all exactly what you want from this genre, displaying No Fun At All's signature sound with great, balanced production. Ingemar's vocals are rock solid and define the Swedish skate-punk sound together with Millencolin's Nikola Sarcevic. We're definitively in the late 90s sound-wise, or as we usually call it, the golden era for punk rock.

That being said, everyone hits a saturation point. No Fun At All has been so visible and audible over the last few years that the wow effect of their quality skate punk isn't quite as evident as it was when "Low Rider" was released, for example. It's a rock solid album with plenty of material to make fans of bands like Much The Same, Pulley, Adhesive, or NUFAN happy. Will it draw in new audiences at this point? I think it's just us aging punks left nowadays.
