Jesus Piece

...So Unknown

Do you think you've experienced a heavy beatdown hardcore album? Meet Jesus Piece and think again. They've always had one of the most grotesquely bulky expressions out there, but their sophomore album "...So Unknown" effectively lays its listener down to waste through a discordant mixture of brutal pounding, horror chords, and unforgivingly dense metalcore unlike almost no other band out there (save for maybe The Acacia Strain). It's slow, weird, and fucked up in all the right ways, thus echoing the atmosphere you'll also find on twisted materials by Code Orange or Candy, to name but a few. Prepare to have your skull smashed into a billion pieces if you go anywhere near the vicinity of a mosh pit for this one.

Yet amidst their chaotic and down-tuned expression, there is a sense in it all. The slow tempo allows for some utterly ridiculous breakdowns to develop, and thick, guttural growls to dominate the soundscape. They've got early 2000s metalcore influence from way back before Gothenburg-styled melodies took over, instead drawing influence from the repertoire of bands like Botch, and perhaps the debut album "Beneath The Encasing Of Ashes" by As I Lay Dying in the process. It's chunky, dirty, and punishing as a listen, but the way it hunts you wave after wave with impenetrable layers of riffs and tearing breakdowns is impressive once you allow their intricacies to filter through the cacophony.

Music as jarring and grating as Jesus Piece is quite often an acquired taste. Yet their expression is expansive enough to appeal to the wider metalcore audience. Tracks like "Stolen Life" and "An Offering To The Night" deliver mental breakdowns but also enough substance to underscore why the scene is buzzing about this band right now. It's not for the faint-hearted, but if you've ever wanted to be flattened by a steamroller for a good half an hour, "...So Unknown" offers what I imagine to be a replicable experience of the same.
