Smadr' Hele Lortet

Organiseret Støj (Organized Noise) has been around within the Danish punk underground for a good sixteen years now. You will almost guaranteed have caught a glimpse of them at any of the smaller, basement-style shows either as one of the warmup bands or as the driving force of the circle pit, which has garnered them a loyal following within the local DIY punk scene. They've released a series of demos and EPs over the years, but never a full-length until "Smadr' Hele Lortet" (roughly translated to 'fuck it all up') last month.

It's a collection of material written since their inception, finally giving vocalist Kristian Holst White a studio outlet for his candid, unconventional observations about life and the state of society. Given his quirky lyricism that's drenched in DIY punk attitude filtered through an old-school hardcore yell and plenty of gang shouts, it has all the ingredients to become a cult release within the Danish scene. It balances the raw, old-school hardcore vibes with melodic skate-punk elements in brilliant fashion, and delivers the material in a tight, in-your-face style that feels simultaneously confrontative and welcoming. It's as if Kristian wants to tell the world, this is what wearing punk ethos on your sleeves is all about.

The riffs are stolen from mid-90s NOFX records pretty much, but it also means they're infectiously catchy with just the right amount of buzzing distortion to create a great platform for White's humorous ramblings about serious sociopolitical issues in songs like "Hvem Tør" ("You're still shouting about a revolution but when is it going to happen!? [...] To change the rules a lot needs to change, we can, of course, keep going to demonstrations while the whole world revolves around kroner"). It's smart but at the same time realistic, which goes against the usual naive idealism that this type of punk usually tends to spit out.

Stylistically, the material ranges from the aforementioned NOFX-style punk rock to furious hardcore bits ("Nikotinskævitevitet") and back to Ramones/Sex Pistols style pogo-pogo no-frills pop punk on both "Kulsort Røg" and "Lille Skarn". Here, the band extensively utilizes whole-band gang shouts during its chorus, which leads to one of the highlight moments on the record. Likewise, "FG" is ideal for circle pits and chant-alongs despite being just 24 seconds long. It's an incredibly catchy and fast-paced injection of high-onslaught energy, which honestly is characteristic of the whole album given it rams seventeen songs in just twenty-six minutes.

Kristian White yells, barks, and sings his way through the record in an old-school hardcore style that might be off-putting at first, but once you allow his quirky lyrical universe to overtake and start ingesting the slick guitars, you begin to realize you're dealing with cult potential. It has a similar appeal as Red Warszawa, but just in a more sociopolitical and definitely smarter manner. It's certainly the surprise of the year for yours truly after never being a fan of their numerous live appearances over the years.
