Best Music Of 2011: Reader's Choice

author TL date 06/02/12

While most music publications seem to start wrapping up a year already in mid-November, we tend to drag our feet more, letting a year close fully while we hope for a few last minute gems. That also means that we've been treating you too all sorts of lists and hindsights throughout the first month of the new year though, and although it's been grand, we're juuuust about ready to call 2011 a dead horse and stop beating it. There's just the matter of this, our 'Reader's Choice' list, which we promised you that we would compile after having asked you all to send us in your individual "Best of 2011" lists. It took a little time to put it together sensibly, but now it's done, so do read on to learn how it turned out:

Method

Readers were asked to submit their proposals for their favorite albums of 2010. They could submit a ranked list up to twenty albums; some chose to submit just their top 5 or top 10, while others sent well beyond 20 'just in case'.

The albums in each list were given a point value according to their position. The higher the position, the more points the album would receive - proportionally. In layman terms, the difference between points for a #1 position and a #2 position was proportionally higher than the difference between #2 and #3. Likewise, the difference between #3 and #4 would be smaller than the difference between #2 and #3. This was done to emphasize high finishes on the ranking list, thus ensuring that the records were valued the most on a couple of lists would receive more points than a whole bunch of 18th place finishes. But not to an extent where a single #1 vote would distort the overall ranking.

Reader's Choice

Once all the submissions were collected together, we were standing with over 228 different albums, which indicates that although we liked a lot of the same albums, everyone had at least a couple in there that others may not have appreciated as much. Below you will find the list compiled according to points, and for each entry you can see the amount of points after the link to the album review.
