Best Music Of 2013: Readers Picks

author PP date 09/01/14

We're still a week or two away before 2014 releases start occupying our daily lives, which means we still have ample time for more 2013 coverage. We've so far seen our editors pick their favorite albums of 2013, followed by regular staff members doing the same, and in the past two weeks we also saw a form on our front page where you, the readers, could submit your competing opinion on what you thought were the ten greatest albums in 2013.

A ton of submissions were sent in - these were compiled together using a very simple points scale: for every #1 finish, an album would be awarded 10 points. For every #2 finish, an album would be awarded 9 points, and so forth, all the way down to #10, which would credit one point on the album's account. Should two releases finish with the same amount of points, the tie-breaker would be highest position on anyone's list. When that was even, then we'd count which album finished on that position the most time, followed by the total number of appearances on all top 10 lists overall.

We received close to 100 nominations of different albums, which says a lot about how good of a year 2013 was for music, but also for the diversity in taste that our readers naturally represent given how our coverage ranges from black metal to soft indie rock and everything in between. Nonetheless, the top 15 albums here were in a sizable lead, and while there are really no surprises on the list, it has to be mentioned that the winning album took the #1 place with such a margin that it left everyone else far behind. Perhaps more interestingly, it was found on many lists that primarily contained music from outside of its genre, speaking for its cross-genre appeal.
