WOA Metal Battle: Roskilde

author PP date 02/05/12

In connection with the Wacken Open Air: Metal Battle contest, we've sent out a short email questionnaire to the bands attending. Tomorrow five bands will battle at Gimle, Roskilde for the final spot to the Copenhagen grand final at Pumpehuset this weekend, so we decided to send them a short questionnaire detailing their preparations and expectations to the qualification stop. Check out their answers below:

RF.net: Thanks for doing this interview. Please introduce yourself to the readers!
Andreas: Well. My name is Andreas, I play guitar and do a bit of vocals in the band TRUSTED FEW. We’ve been around for what seems to be ages now. Playing an ever changing combination of what we think are the most awesome energetic and melodic parts of the metal world. And then sprinkled by all our (some would say queer) influences.

RF.net: What is the main reason you are participating in Wacken Open Air: Metal Battle? To gain more exposure? For the Wacken slot? To see how you measure up against your fellow peers?
Andreas: We made the finals last year so of course our main reason is to play Wacken!? But of cause I have a more diplomatic answer up my sleeve. In our case, as our music tends to change quite a bit every time we start to record something new, this is our opportunity to get new material tested out before a crowd, playing them live, and then getting feedback.

RF.net: How have you prepared for the qualification show?
Andreas: It will be energetic, it will be fresh. I know johan traveled the world to tan up. I know Philip has been practicing his micro playing battlefield 3. Adam has definitely been working out. Christian, the man of bass, wanders ofo in meditation states were he communicates with Stalin. And I… I’ve been playing a lot of Skyrim.. I mean a lot of Skyrim.. so I guess we’re ready to bring it…

RF.net: What are your expectations of the qualification show?
Andreas: Meeting old and new friends. Reaching new people with our music. When that’s said I look forward to experience the playground feeling you get at W:O:A’s shows. Artists having a good time with each other and actually time to talk to people after the show. And of course experiencing all the new music you’ve never heard before.

RF.net: How do you see your chances of winning the qualification?
Andreas: How do you see our chances of winning the qualification ? hehe .. I make no assumptions to who will be the lucky ones. Last year a band consisting of 17 year olds (some were even younger) swept everything away and took the ticket to Wacken, so I personally think the young newcomers have a clear edge over some of the older...I mean established bands. But it’s all love in the end.. And all down to who the judges see fit in the Wacken image.

RF.net: What do you think about your competition (the other bands)?
Andreas: It’s awesome. Strong line up, some newcomers... but never write those off. Hmm. It’s a wide array of genres represented. That’s good. Cold Night For Alligators with a new front man is exciting stuff. Don’t really know what you want out of me with that question :D hehe.. I will cook it down to “I think quite highly about our competition.”

RF.net: What do you have to do to impress the crowd and the jury to win the qualification?
Andreas: I’ve always heard that you should hit your notes and play tight while looking like it’s the easiest thing you’ll do today. It should actually have a positive effect on the listener… but how many got that formula down to perfection is yet to be seen.

Barricade

RF.net: Thanks for doing this interview. Please introduce yourself to the readers!
Barricade: You are very welcome – We are Barricade, a Copenhagen based metal band! *horns*

RF.net: What is the main reason you are participating in Wacken Open Air: Metal Battle? To gain more exposure? For the Wacken slot? To see how you measure up against your fellow peers?
Barricade: The main reason is to get on the road and play live – to see how people react to our music and to play outside our home turf. So it’s quite simple: we love playing live - that's why we enrolled for this circus.

RF.net: How have you prepared for the qualification show?
Barricade: We have fine-tuned some new (and even heavier) material that we look forward to try out – and made a set that we believe will make people bang their heads around the globe – not least at the W:O:A Metal Battle qualification show.

RF.net: What are your expectations of the qualification show?
Barricade: We’re always psyched about every opportunity that we get to share our noise and bring our act to another stage. This night is really no different – there will be a lot of great people and bands at the show – so we expect to unleash all what we’ve got and then let us see what happens. When all comes down to it, we just hope to see a lot of happy head-banging faces – that’s about it

RF.net: How do you see your chances of winning the qualification?
Barricade: Like most events that have not occurred - chances are that anything can happen!

RF.net: What do you think about your competition (the other bands)?
Barricade: The other guys are tough as fuck and play some awesome music as well – so we are looking forward to meet up with them and to make this evening a blast!

RF.net: What do you have to do to impress the crowd and the jury to win the qualification?
Barricade: We play music simply because we cannot resist it, same goes for playing live, so that’s always the idea: to kick out the jams and smash through our set! All in all, just being ourselves – and sticking to that since that is what we do best.

Defecto

RF.net: Thanks for doing this interview. Please introduce yourself to the readers!
Hey guys. We are DEFECTO - an alternative heavy band from Denmark.

Our intentions are to give the listener a great experience, by delivering tight, punchy, metal-virtuosity emerging from solid rock, with catchy and strong vocal lines.

We’ve been playing together since November 2010, where we merged our two previous projects (Sonne and Deviant) into one strong unit.

RF.net: What is the main reason you are participating in Wacken Open Air: Metal Battle? To gain more exposure? For the Wacken slot? To see how you measure up against your fellow peers?
We are participating in the W:O:A metal battle to share our music with as many people as possible. To perform and have a great time, while sharing the stage with some really awesome artists. The Wacken slot is an opportunity that really would boost our career, and a dream come true.

RF.net: How have you prepared for the qualification show?
We always prepare our shows carefully, and the qualification show is no exception. If you want to have a chance in the music biz, you have to deliver a solid and highly entertaining show, while still performing the music the best way possible.

RF.net: What are your expectations of the qualification show?
We are expecting to play one hell of a show, where we will demonstrate what the core values of DEFECTO are.

RF.net: How do you see your chances of winning the qualification?
We see our chances of winning as being equal to all the other bands. The bands are selected carefully by people who know what they’re doing - and each band will surely bring something special to the stage.

RF.net: What do you think about your competition (the other bands)?
The competition is tough – they’re all great bands, and they each do something special within the metal-genre. We just hope we can keep up!

RF.net: What do you have to do to impress the crowd and the jury to win the qualification?
It’s all about connecting with the audience – bringing entertainment to the stage as well as playing music that will have an impact on people. It’s hard to stand out while not trying too hard – so we do what we feel is natural and hope that our show, our energy and our songs will stick in people’s heads!

Cold Night For Alligators

RF.net: Thanks for doing this interview. Please introduce yourself to the readers!
We are Cold Night For Alligators – tech core from Copenhagen. Our music is a playground for us. We play the music that we think is fun to play, and we find inspiration in the music we are listening to, everything from Born of Osiris to Skrillex to Jose Gonzalez. It gives us a very various sound universe which some might find confusing, but luckily there are people that like this as well.

RF.net: What is the main reason you are participating in Wacken Open Air: Metal Battle? To gain more exposure? For the Wacken slot? To see how you measure up against your fellow peers?
We like to think of this event as a great place to promote the band, rather than a competition. It’s very difficult competing on music because everything is subjective, but it’s still very exciting competing with all these great bands that Denmark has to offer. It will be difficult even just to make it to the final, but we will do our best, and maybe that will give us the opportunity to play Wacken this summer.

RF.net: How have you prepared for the qualification show?
We are about to release new CD with our new lead singer Sebastian, so we have of course spent a lot of time recording. We will present a brand new track at Gimle and we are really looking forward to that!

RF.net: What are your expectations of the qualification show?
The qualification show is going to be a great night with some awesome bands. Especially our mates in Trusted Few will be cool to see live. The competition is tough and it’s very difficult to tell which band will go through, but we will do our best and maybe that’s enough

RF.net: What do you have to do to impress the crowd and the jury to win the qualification?
We will hopefully impress the jury with the values we have in this band and in our music. People acknowledge our technical skills as well as our humor on stage. We are not “evil” or “true”, we are just ourselves and that’s the right way for us. Our shows are funny – we tell bad jokes, drink way too much Monsters and hopefully the jury won’t be scared away from that J
